Thank you. I really like your style of writing. You make it easier for me to understand some things, especially about finance, etc.; and, I have never heard of this man … of course I haven’t.
Thanks so much for the comment. I believe the highbrow approach many experts take to writing about financial markets, the economy, and so forth is one of the reasons why people feel disconnected from the financial sector. The reality is that it touches nearly every aspect of life. I’m glad to hear that I’m able to help make it more real for you and others.
What you are saying is really pay attention to sharp guys (like oligarchic billionaires) they are skeptical about the economy?
Why are they skeptical? Even if the economy tanks and they lose millions, their personal economy (in the billions) won’t be affected.
Can we really “watch” them? They can hide behind their money. They won't have to change anything about their or their future generations wealth... they're gonna’ ride it out while the commoners starve and kill each other.
Marlon, I’ve lived in NC all my life and i remember in the late 80s that Texas real estate companies came to buy us out or build us out! What goes around comes around… ! Good work, sir!
It’s truly amazing. There is a couple not far from where I live that has a gigantic three-level beach home that has to be worth at least $2 million. Not even their primary residence. Occasionally they flag a huge Trump “Take America Back” flag from their third floor balcony. Whenever I see it, aside from being disguste, I ask myself, “they’ve got it made, so what on earth do they have to be so pissed off about?”
Thanks for the history, Marlon. I had never heard of Steve Cohen nor his company paying the fines. Sharp in the sense of playing the angles seems like a pejorative to me. Give me Warren Buffet please.
Yes, indeed. Did you see the post from his annual message to stockholders about how much federal tax his company was proud to pay. A true patriot and hero.
Your exchange with the ex-marine perfectly illustrates how trust in expertise and reality can still cut through the noise. People often default to narratives that make them feel secure, even when those narratives do not align with facts. But when faced with someone who actually understands how the economy works and can explain it clearly, that trust can be built in real time.
That is exactly what sharp people do; not just in finance but in life. They recognize when the other person knows more and adjust accordingly. The real challenge is that too many people double down instead of listening. Your conversation was a rare moment when someone was willing to rethink their perspective. If more people approached discussions that way, trust in knowledge and institutions might not be in such short supply.
It’s exciting to have Kahlil and his voice elevated here on Substack, we need a focus on more young activists across the board; this was one of my favorite Substack Live conversations I’ve joined.
You explained it well and you had an audience willing to hear, process and accept new information. That man can be thankful he ran into you. If he and his partners do go through with their plans, they may be able to do so in a more defensive position. Many people don't make the connections between what they read and how it affects other conditions, and you proved again why it's so important.
I quit the Mets after it came out the Wilpons (former owners) were vacationing with the Madoff's in the south of France and returns from Bernie's 'fund' were helping pay player salaries. So going to the most notorious insider trader isn't that bad of jump. Here's that book on Stevie. I'll always have '86.
Marlon, Love this! You are the best 'splainer on how the money world works. Deep appreciation from a fan who is just trying to keep up.
Fun lunch 🇺🇸
Beautiful!

Thank you for allowing me to rant a bit.
Ain't this the f*ck'n truth: "Billionaires don’t go to jail, they become oligarchs. Please try to keep up."

Thanks, Claire! From the way the island (and the mainland) is built out, mission accomplished unfortunately…
Had a similar discussion in FLA last week... paraphrasing 'the last guy really screwed up everything...oh, let me tell you about my new boat'...

Thanks for the comment. To be fair, Warren Buffett is the sharpest knife in the drawer!

Yes I did.

Today’s conversation was a huge success!

Damn Stevie hit the Ozempic hard.

Having knowledge and real answers is so great! I’m glad you were able to spread the plain reality gospel to that guy.
When I hear something that seems so obviously incorrect I just stutter. Thanks for the tips in diplomacy. I appreciate your content and help
Right on!
