That video really illustrates how strong China is. I applaud the goals and implementation of the CHIPS act but it sounds as if without the support of the federal government, all the advances will now be DOA. Add that to our loss of standing throughout the world now and it’s clear China is poised to fill the void and do so with more expertise and at a far cheaper cost. Thanks for highlighting this latest Trump disaster.
In eliminating the Department of Education, fucking with universities over freedom of speech, and doing everything possible to destroy what little intellectual resources we have, he sure is making it easy for the US to race to the bottom. But hey, Israel will save us. 🙄
Chapelle’s joke is funny until you realize that, if it all goes according to the MAGA plan, we WILL have that kind of labor force here and the WON’T earn more than they do in China.
I've been lightly following the Chinese economy for over 2 decades. It's amazing people in the US don't bother to learn about the powerhouse which China has become.
That said, they face an uphill battle regarding their population thanks to the One Child policy. It was successful in that it slowed down population growth. However, they kept the plan in place for too long. It's predicted that the aging population will grow quickly while they will have a much smaller younger population to work. On top of that, Chinese leaders are encouraging families to have more kids but it's been reported that many families don't want to have more than one child, thus exacerbating this problem.
Anyway, I can't remember the exact timeline, but I think it will be felt over the next 50 years.
Maybe, but when you're that authoritarian you can get very creative with policies to reverse the trends. Extra taxes for people with no kids, tax breaks for people with lots of kids is just the start. Having more kids could get you higher rank in the party, better terms of loans, all sorts of other benefits.
Eventually, they could just make prisoners reproduce and place the babies with "politically reliable" families if they wanted to. Or they could sabotage or outlaw all the birth control or put fertility drugs in the food supply.
The point is, the limit on what drastic action they could take seems pretty high, I don't see how they will fail to deal.
This is fantastic! The other thing that feels so disingenuous is that growing the rate at which jobs in general, and in manufacturing in particular will continue to be replaced tech/AGI alternatives is a primary objective of most companies. It is such an obvious grift. In any case, thank you for this 🙏
The US is still number one in armament exports, however…

Exactly. If they get their way, they’ll make serfs of us all.

Well, why don’t we both share?
