Please join me tonight at 7:00 pm EST for The Journeyman's first Substack Live event: a conversation with Arturo Dominguez, the publisher of Decolonized Journalism. Arturo’s newsletter focuses on human rights, political extremism, and immigration issues. In addition to his work on Substack, Arturo is an investigative journalist for Unicorn Riot.
Arturo and I met several years ago through our association with Writers and Editors of Color, a diverse collective of writers and journalists. The two of us will discuss a variety of issues and answer your questions. So mark your calendars. I hope to see you there!
This live event is open to the public, although future events may be limited to paid and free subscribers to this newsletter. To participate, you’ll need to download the Substack app, however, all subscribers will receive an email prompting you to download the app and join the live video when it launches.
Why is this happening now?
I’d wanted to do a live stream on Substack for some time but couldn't figure out how. About a week ago, I noticed the live functionality was suddenly available to me on the Substack app.
What changed? I didn’t realize it until now, but only newsletters that have reached Substack's “Bestseller” status have the option to conduct live-stream events. You can learn more about the Bestseller designation here. The minimum requirement for Bestseller status is one hundred paying subscribers and last month, The Journeyman reached that milestone.
Over the last several months, subscribers to The Journeyman have increased significantly, jumping from about 3,700 subscribers in early September to over 6,750 as of this morning. Paid subscribers have increased from about 55 to just over 166 during the same period. Bottom line: you made this event happen.
Why such growth? I sense that the newsletter’s sudden growth spurt is driven, at least in part, by the uncertainty of what lies ahead once Donald Trump takes office, combined with immense dissatisfaction with how legacy media writ large. Simply put, folks are turning off their televisions and taking their business elsewhere. I recognize that correlation does not equal causation, but at the same time, I don't believe in coincidence.
Whatever the reasons I welcome those of you who've recently discovered this newsletter and appreciate all who have lent their support over the past few years.
And with that, I hope you’ll join me tonight!

Congratulations on your well deserved success!
Congratulations on the growth in readers. I cannot attend because my phone is dumb.
